Weekly Soil Event Set for 2023
Building Soil Health for Sustainable Farming: A Focus at the Pasture for Life Soil Challenge Week
The Pasture for Life Soil Challenge Week, held in April 2023, aimed to equip farmers with the tools and knowledge necessary to enhance soil health and boost the productivity of livestock farms across the UK [1]. The event, which emphasised practical learning and awareness about soil health, served as a foundation for sustainable pasture-based farming.
During the event, various soil health tests were utilised to assess and improve soil conditions. While the specific tests used in the Soil Challenge Week may not have been explicitly detailed in the search results, typical soil health assessments in such events usually include soil nutrient analysis, soil organic matter content measurement, soil biology tests, soil structure and compaction evaluation, and carbon cycling and sequestration indicators [1][3].
Participants were encouraged to use these types of tests to identify soil limitations and implement management practices that promote a thriving pasture ecosystem, which in turn supports healthier livestock and better nutrient cycling into the soil [1][3].
Rachel Hall, a Pasture for Life member, hosted events at Gutchpool Farm in Dorset, where the group discussed the tools Rachel has used to improve her heavy clay soil through mob grazing with sheep and planting herbal leys [2]. Simple tests and possible solutions to soil issues were also examined at Gutchpool Farm. Rhizosheaths, coatings of soil particles that cling to plant roots and indicate biological/microbial activity in the rhizosphere (root zone) and the formation of good soil structure, were a key focus [3].
Legume nodulation assessment, which gives an indication of the activity of legumes in the sward and whether they are fixing nitrogen in the soil, was another topic of interest [3]. Earthworms, an indicator of biological life in the soil and higher numbers of which can be an indicator of improved soil health, were also discussed [3].
Comparisons of soil samples from different fields across Gutchpool Farm were made, and Pasture for Life members received a discount of £80 off the Soilmentor regen subscription for attending the events [2]. Other locations for events during the Soil Challenge Week included Aberduhonw Farm in Builth Wells, as well as the Chilterns, Buckinghamshire, Kent, Cornwall, County Durham, Shropshire, and online [2].
