"Unveiling Sustainable Fashion": Insights into Templa's Pioneering Biodegradable Coat
The 'Designing to Disappear' jacket, a collaborative effort between Templa, Allied Feather + Down, and Active Apparel Group, has made a significant impact in the fashion industry, winning the prestigious ISPO Award 2024. This innovative jacket is set to redefine sustainability in high-tech performance apparel.
Allied Feather + Down, an insulation company with a 40-year history of working directly with farmers, has been instrumental in this project. They have been developing the textiles and trims for the 'Designing to Disappear' jacket for approximately five years. Notably, every snap and zipper on the jacket is biodegradable, contributing to its eco-friendly nature.
Templa, a luxury outdoor brand that operates in a transdisciplinary space where the Alpine, the outdoor, and the street converge, has designed a minimalist jacket that is 99% biodegradable. If buried in the ground, the jacket will completely disappear after five years. This groundbreaking design does not compromise on factors such as hand feel, down insulation, seams, zippers, volume, attitude, silhouette, fashion, or technical aspects.
Matthew Betcher, Marketing Director at Allied Feather + Down, spearheaded a program that looked at designing for the future and improving the lives of farmers. He believes that sustainability no longer has to compromise fashion or performance. Incremental changes, according to Betcher, can be explosive.
This is only the second collaboration Templa has chosen to work on after a buzzy capsule with Raf Simons was released in 2019. The collaboration aimed to renegotiate how we look at commercial growth and design for the end of life, moving towards another level of circularity. Allied Feather + Down has developed centers for partners to recycle their used garments, furthering this goal.
The 'Designing to Disappear' jacket is part of a growing movement to make biodegradable materials the norm in high-tech performance apparel. It serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving sustainable change within the fashion industry. The jacket will be released in September 2025, marking a significant milestone in the journey towards a more sustainable future.
Despite extensive research, the person who initiated the collaboration with Templa for the development of the biodegradable jacket could not be identified in the search results. Nonetheless, the collaboration between these three industry leaders has undeniably set a new standard for sustainable fashion.
