The memorial takes the form of a tilted square structure, symbolising the destructive imbalance caused by human intervention in the landscape. The square, a purely man-made shape, does not exist in nature, serving as a stark reminder of humanity's disrupting impact on the environment.
At the heart of the memorial are 272 yellow ipê trees, each planted in memory of one victim. These native Brazilian trees serve as a living memorial, with their seasonal changes symbolising life, hope, and renewal. The ipê blooms yellow flowers, signifying perseverance and hope despite tragedy. The flower shape recurs throughout the memorial as a symbol of each victim and the legacy they left behind.
The site culminates at a viewpoint overlooking the valley affected by the disaster, symbolising transcendence, continuity, and looking towards the future while honouring the past. The memorial balances personal grief with collective memory, creating an immersive spatial experience where landscape, structure, and emotion are inseparable.
The memorial's pavilion is a twisted, fragmented form, representing the shattered dreams and overwhelming force of the mud that caused the disaster. The porous pavilion's design communicates with the outside and proposes a path, generating questions rather than providing answers. The memorial's pavilion is made of exposed concrete colored by a red pigment extracted from toxic iron ore waste, reflecting the tragedy's origins.
A small rectangular skylight in the pavilion allows a beam of light to cut through on 25 January at 12.28pm, striking a heart-shaped druse of crystals. This poignant moment serves as a reminder of the exact time and place of the disaster. Architect Gustavo Penna plans to erect a steel structure in the mountains, symbolising the hands of a clock marking 12.28.
The families refer to the final two victims as "jewels". The memorial succeeds as both a place for personal grief and collective memory, ensuring that preventable disasters are never forgotten. The ipê trees transform with the seasons, symbolising life and hope, while the heart-shaped druse of crystals serves as a lasting reminder of the lives lost.
