United Kingdom's top waste management company grants financing to Ruthin Repair Cafe
In the heart of Denbigshire, Wales, the Ruthin Repair Café continues its mission to repair household goods for local residents, thanks to funding from Enfinium's Repair Cafés Support Fund. Launched in March 2024, this funding has been instrumental in expanding the Café's operations.
With a team of 24 dedicated volunteers, the Ruthin Repair Café has fixed an impressive 963 items across 31 repair events since February 2020. This funding, amounting to £1,500, has been used to increase the frequency and scale of repair events, cover costs such as room hire and consumables, and purchase necessary tools and materials.
Mike Maudsley, CEO of Enfinium, commented on the significance of repairing broken items, stating, "Repairing broken items reduces waste, lowers consumption, and decreases carbon emissions." This sentiment is echoed by Anne Lewis, the organiser of the Ruthin Repair Café, who expressed her enthusiasm about the funding, stating it will help continue to support local residents and volunteer training.
The funding will also enable volunteers to develop their skills through first aid training, tool sharpening classes, and PAT safety-testing certification for electrical item repairs. The Café, which takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 10AM to 3PM at the Naylor Leyland Centre in Ruthin, North Wales, is free and open to all.
Common repairs at the Café include electricals, particularly toasters and vacuum cleaners, and sewing repairs, such as soft toys and clothes. The Repair Cafés Support Fund, currently standing at £60,000, supports cafés within a 30-mile radius of one of Enfinium's facilities in Kent, North Wales, West Yorkshire, or the West Midlands. Cafés can apply for funding of up to £1,500 per annum before 31 May 2024.
As Enfinium invests £800m in a carbon capture project and plans for the 'UK's first' waste-to-energy carbon capture pilot, the Ruthin Repair Café is a testament to their commitment to sustainability. Maintaining a single television for an additional seven years can save the equivalent of 657kg CO2, a fact that underscores the importance of repair and reuse.
