Unconventional Candy Containers: A Novelty in Retail Stores for Sugary Treats
In the heart of Almaty, Kazakhstan, a unique initiative is underway to bring joy and happiness to children from low-income families and those with special needs this holiday season. The initiative, started late November and running until December 25th, has seen the installation of special boxes in various food outlets across the city.
Last year, this initiative was first held, collecting a total of 183 gifts, which equates to approximately 130 kilograms of sweets. This year, due to the pandemic, the number of families needing help has increased. As a result, the initiative is more important than ever.
The "Doing Good Together" volunteer movement, spearheading the initiative, has encouraged residents to donate sweets and toys. Volunteers from the movement have been instrumental in installing the collection boxes in stores.
Natalia Minałina, from the "Doing Good Together" movement, reports that the collected money was spent on organizing a New Year's party for needy families last year. This year, due to quarantine restrictions, a large children's party cannot be held, and gifts will be delivered to homes instead.
The response from the community has been overwhelming. Some business owners refused to participate, but most store owners supported the initiative. In addition to sweets, residents of Ust-Kamenogorsk also left toys in the boxes.
Each child's bag will contain not only sweets but also fruits and toys. A photo and video report of the work done, the collected sweets, and the formed bags will be posted after the event.
The "Doing Good Together" movement uses social media to report on their volunteer work and how collected funds are spent. They invite others to join their initiative to give children a holiday. The list of participating stores in the event can be found on the "Doing Good Together" volunteer movement's account @tvorim_dobro_uka.
