UK's 25-Year Journey into Natural Burials: Arte's 'Compost Me!' Tonight

For 25 years, the UK has been embracing natural burials in forests, using eco-friendly urns and coffins. This method, known as recomposition, is also gaining attention in Germany. Tonight, Arte's documentary 'Compost Me! - Natural Burials' at 9:45 PM explores this innovative approach to end-of-life rituals.

The process begins with the body being placed in a biodegradable cocoon on a bed of hay, straw, and flowers. It's then covered with the same materials. Over 40 days, the body transforms into earth, with temperatures rising to over 70 degrees Celsius. Most medication residues break down almost completely during this process.

The UK has been pioneering this method for a quarter of a century. Now, Germany is also exploring human composting. Schleswig-Holstein has permitted a private company to test this closed system. However, there are still reservations among funeral directors and authorities, though churches are more open to the idea. The use of human humus for growing vegetables remains a sensitive topic.

Tonight's documentary on Arte delves into the world of natural burials and human composting. As this method gains traction, it raises questions about our relationship with death and the environment. While some may find it challenging to imagine, it offers an alternative that aligns with sustainable practices.
