Toast artwork spanning 500 pieces, created by a local Hong Kong artist, adorns an entire cafe wall.
Artist Nomkakaii Showcases Global Toast Illustrations in Hong Kong
In the vibrant neighbourhood of Sai Ying Pun, Hong Kong Island, Ztoryhome café is currently hosting an extraordinary exhibition. Titled "#toast500," the exhibition features 500 illustrations of toast from cities around the world, created by the 22-year-old Hong Kong-born artist Nomkakaii.
This is Nomkakaii's first solo show in Hong Kong since her return from the US, where she earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Southern California. The exhibition is a testament to her two-and-a-half-year project that began in the US and reflects her desire to reconnect with her Hong Kong community and share her art locally.
Nomkakaii sees toast as a form of canvas and artistic expression. Each person makes it differently, and she compares the process to drawing. Her passion for art stems from childhood, and she found that brushes and colors helped her express her emotions, even as an introvert.
The illustrations cover an entire wall of the café, featuring toast from cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York, and Seoul. The exhibition is a means for Nomkakaii to share her identity with the Hong Kong community, showcasing the diversity and interconnectedness of the world through a simple, everyday item.
Ztoryhome café is the perfect setting for this unique exhibition. With its cosy atmosphere and emphasis on storytelling, it provides the perfect backdrop for Nomkakaii's artistic vision. The café's mission aligns with Nomkakaii's, as they both seek to create experiences that inspire and connect people.
The "Toast Around the World" exhibition is currently ongoing at Ztoryhome café. If you're in the area, be sure to stop by and witness this one-of-a-kind showcase of Nomkakaii's talent and vision. It's a reminder that even the simplest things in life can hold profound meaning and beauty.
