In a surprising turn of events, the Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider, a rare gem from the 1950s, fetched a staggering $1.9 million at the RM Sotheby's auction in Monterey in 2023 [1]. Despite its battered condition, the car's rarity and historical significance were enough to drive up the bidding.

This particular Ferrari Mondial Spider Series 1 is one of only 13 ever made in 1954, making them incredibly rare [1]. The sports car, designed by Pinin Farina and rebodied by Scaglietti, had a storied racing career, participating in famous races in the 1950s. Factory driver Franco Cortese drove the car in the iconic Mille Miglia.

However, the Ferrari 500 Mondial's racing career was not without its setbacks. It changed hands a few times over the years and was involved in several accidents. One such incident resulted in a fire that left the car burned-out and rusted [1]. The car was kept in a barn with 19 other Ferraris for several decades.

Despite its troubled past, the Ferrari 500 Mondial sparked interest among collectors. Instagram user Ryan estimated that the sports car would go for at least $1.2 million at the auction [1]. The final selling price of $1.9 million suggests that the car probably sold for the right price.
