Tettnang's apple farming scene is abuzz with change. Tobias Appenmaier, a 34-year-old farmer, has taken over his parents' fruit farm, bringing a fresh perspective to the traditional business. As the apple harvest reaches its peak, Appenmaier reflects on his new role and the unique qualities of his produce.

Appenmaier, who became a full-time farmer in April 2024, initially had doubts about making a living from the land. However, he now finds great joy in the work, especially during the apple harvest, which lasts from late August to late October. His parents are relieved to have found a successor within the family, a feat not always guaranteed in today's world.

The apple harvest is a labor of love, requiring coordination from the family and harvest helpers. Appenmaier finds the transformation of the tree from winter to summer fascinating. In winter, the tree bears no fruit, but by summer, it is laden with red apples and cherries. Despite the hard work, Appenmaier prefers matte apples to 'lacquered' ones and finds the question 'Can you eat the apples?' amusing, as the answer is a resounding yes. Strict plant protection product regulations ensure the apples are safe to eat without washing.

Appenmaier's favorite Swabian word is 'Bodabira', meaning potato, which he affectionately refers to as the 'apple of the earth'. To store apples, he recommends keeping them cool and dark, suitable for refrigerators or basements.

As the apple harvest continues, so does the search for a successor to Tobias Appenmaier. While the candidate has not been publicly announced, the farming community awaits the next chapter in Tettnang's apple farming history.
