A chilling tale from Westklüne, Usedom

Westklüne, a quaint fishing village nestled on the Haff of Usedom, remains etched in the minds of many for a haunting event that transpired on December 11, 2013. The horrific house fire claimed the lives of two elderly souls living in this 240-year-old community, with only 12 houses and 17 residents back then.

The Ghost of Old Westklüne Resurrects

These days, the property belongs to the duo of Karin Wohltat-Meyendorf and Norbert Meyendorf, who migrated from Potsdam to rebuild their lives by the coast. "Fate brought us to Westklüne," shares the 66-year-old. Since 2016, they've poured their souls into transforming the waterfront property, resulting in a grand main house with a guest room featuring a plush wellness bathroom, a small vacation home, and amenities that'd make any ghost green with envy.

Rising Tides and Soaring Expectations

Post-COVID, vacationers have evolved to expect the moon and the stars. "The demand is no longer mere happiness; it's sheer opulence," Karin observes. This new wave of tourists, hailing from the old federal states, have sent prices skyrocketing, making Karin, like many others, question the shameless cost of food and beach chairs.

Trash Talk and the Art of Lodging

Guests, in their quest for self-catering freedom, can frequently leave the guest room a disaster zone, with litter scattered everywhere. Consequently, Karin revised her rental concept, stipulating that the room can no longer be rented without catering - breakfast is now compulsory.

One Night, Two Nights, or More?

Karin urges fellow landlords to consider offering flexiblity when it comes to rental durations. "Why limit ourselves to weekly rentals? Let vacationers decide their stay," she suggests. This approach might result in days of emptiness, but Karin feels this sacrifice is worth it. Plus, the additional fees for furry companions ought to be reconsidered. "In some regions, the daily rate for a dog is 35 euros - I find that twice as shameless," she quips, a dog lover herself.

The Art of Theft and Forgetfulness

Like any good host, Karin has a treasure trove of stories, from missing items to outright theft. "A shower head seal ring was pilfered, more like plucked out by a ravenous bird!" she recalls. And who can forget the creative guest who tore out a page from her Christmas present - a beautiful art print calendar filled with historical views of Potsdam?

Despite the antics of some guests, Karin is usually caught up in organizing forgotten items or fulfilling special requests, ensuring that her guests remain pampered and content.

Having witnessed the perils of tourism firsthand, Karin penned a letter to our editorial team, sharing her thoughts on reckless driving on the island. "For years, I've observed tourists attempting dangerously aggressive overtaking maneuvers that lead to numerous accidents, some even fatal," she confesses.

In their quest for opulence, modern tourists demand more than just happiness at the picturesque Westkluene home-and-garden retreat. This change has led to rising prices in the area, prompting questions about the excess cost of necessities like food and beach chairs.

Karin, the homeowner, has implemented a new rental concept in response to the challenges of self-catering guests, now requiring breakfast to be included with the rental of her luxurious guest room.

The art of theft and forgetfulness is not confined to Westkluene, as Karin has encountered instances of missing items and creative antics from guests, such as a pilfered shower head seal ring and a torn-out page from a historical art print calendar. Despite these incidents, Karin remains dedicated to ensuring her guests are pampered and content.
