Sylvia and Joachim W. have been wrestling with the Munich housing market for years. Their son, Christoph (35), is on a mission to find an affordable abode for his parents. But it's no easy feat.

Munich - It's a struggle for Christoph W. on the phone. He's hunting for an apartment, but not for himself - for his aged parents, Sylvia (64) and Joachim (72) W. They've been on a relentless hunt for a new home for the last three years. They've scoured the classifieds, online platforms, and personal connections. They've seen apartments, yet the rent prices just don't align with their budget. Despair echoes in Christoph's words as he discusses their predicament with our team.

Christoph W.'s Dilemma: A Desperate Search for an Affordable Pad in Munich

The W. family faces imminent eviction by the end of July, as their landlord craves the apartment. They're not in pursuit of a swanky digs. They're after a humble two to three rooms that warrant a fair price-to-value ratio. "It should be achievable," one might figure. However, even when an apartment is viewed, the price tag proves unbearable. Joachim W. points fingers at the city for inaction. He believes there are countless ways for landlords to dodge regulations and charge exorbitant rates, and the city council is doing nothing to stop it.

Christoph W. initially sought help surreptitiously, sans his parents' knowledge. "I'm out to cast light on this absurd situation unfolding in Munich," he admits. It's a tough move for him, but desperation drove him to it. Apart from their apartment quest, there's a host of personal strains plaguing the W. family. Joachim W. is drawing his pension, and Sylvia lost her job at the start of the year when the trademark company Sport Scheck collapsed. To top it off, Sylvia received a cancer diagnosis. "Life keeps piling on," laments Christoph.

Hidden Hurdles: Poverty in Munich

Securing an affordable apartment in Munich is no walk in the park, much less a senior-friendly one. High rent rates pose a continual challenge for Seniors in Munich. As the Munich Poverty Report of 2022 reveals, many pensioners struggle to cover their housing expenses: these expenses often exhaust pension income, leaving the seniors with less than the subsistence minimum. The city calls it a "hidden emergency" - an affliction neither seen nor acknowledged in official figures, as many elderly folks choose not to claim necessary social benefits due to embarrassment.

Yearning for a Roof: The W. Parents' Search for a Budget-Friendly Shelter

The W. parents are now pondering a move back to their home region of North Rhine-Westphalia. The prospect brings stress to Christoph W. Given his own family resides in Germering, having his parents nearby would be a comfort. "Knowing they're only a short drive away provides peace of mind," he explains. "If something happens, you can swiftly rush to their aid."
