Strategies for Harmonizing Rugs in Spacious Interconnected Spaces or Contiguous Rooms

Want a fail-proof guide on how to slay the art of coordinating area rugs in open floor plans or adjoining rooms? Look no further! Here, we'll break down the basics, from styles and textures to color schemes, so you can snag the perfect rugs that'll turn heads without competing for attention.

Now, I've tackled my fair share of design dilemmas over the years, and I've even penned an entire series on how to decorate your own fortress of solitude. But lately, coordinating rugs that won't clash in our main living spaces has been a battle I've faced, and I know I'm not alone!

So, for your convenience, I've put together three different rug color categories that'll give you a solid starting point when shopping. Any rug in each category will jive harmoniously with its counterparts. But let's kick things off by learning how to share the (carpeted) love between multiple rugs without drama!

How to Join Forces: 2 (or More) Area Rugs, Aligned!

Defining spaces in open floor plans, or aiding adjoining rooms in finding common ground, is a breeze when you use area rugs strategically. Simply assess the layout of your space, and bear in mind the function of each area, as well as the rug shape that best fits the bill. You'll be a rug-savvy sleuth in no time!

Take note of these tidbits for living room and family room rug placement:

  1. The rug needs to be large enough to accommodate the front two feet of your sofa and any chairs, anchoring the whole seating cluster (#GoldenRule!).
  2. For a dining space, a round rug tends to work best with a round table, while rectangular or square rugs are ideal for living/family rooms.
  3. Runners that match your larger rugs can lend a helping hand in front of a sink or down a hallway.

Coordinating Rugs in Adjoining Rooms: Magic Tricks up our Sleeve!

In my home, the foyer boasts two openings – one into our home office, which leads to the dining room, and another into the family room (which happened to be under construction when I snapped these pics!). While I strive to keep the decor cohesive between these three rooms, finding area rugs for each that don't squabble for the spotlight has been an area in need of improvement.

Fear not! Getting your adjoining rooms' rugs to see eye-to-eye isn’t mission impossible. Here are two tricks to help:

Color magic: Begin by identifying the primary color scheme in both rooms. Look for rugs that show off complementary hues or patterns that bond like peas in a pod. Embrace these color connections to create a visual link between your rooms without sacrificing individuality.

Pattern prowess: If color harmony isn't your #1 priority, take solace in the power of on-point patterns. Vary the scale of patterns in each room (use a large pattern in one room, a smaller one in the other) and conjure up the same or complementary colors for a dynamic yet harmonious look.

Remember, it's perfectly cool (and totally stylish!) to rock two different floral or geometric patterned rugs in the same area, as long as you ace the size game (vary the scale so one isn't shouting for attention over the other).

Textured Treasures: Embrace the Power of Texture!

Texture plays a crucial role in the design world, and it's no exception when selecting area rugs. Opt for natural fiber rugs like sisal or jute to introduce an earthy vibe tailored to various decor styles.

Whether you adore these earth-friendly options or prefer something silky-smooth, opening yourself up to texture can result in an inviting, well-rounded space. For instance, layering a neutral-toned jute rug under a patterned rug in a living area creates an appealing, cozy atmosphere.

Layer the Love: Multiple Rugs for Depth and Dimension

Embrace the glory of layering rugs for an added dose of depth, action, and suspense! This technique is popular (and impressive!), and it can be mastered by mere mortals, too.

Get started by selecting a larger rug with a no (or small) pattern as the base layer. Go for a neutral color or natural fiber (sisal, anyone?) for added durability and versatility. Then, add a smaller rug with a bolder pattern or color scheme on top of the base layer. This little number can complement an adjoining room or introduce a stylish twist to the overall design.

Layering your rugs is like an easy, instant upgrade for your living room, bedroom, or any space that could use a dash of magic. Plus, it makes it seem like you've been collecting stylish finds over time, and who doesn't love stories with a dash of mystery?

  1. To create a harmonious living space that seamlessly blends interior-design elements, consider coordinating your home-and-garden decor, such as using area rugs that match in texture, color, or pattern.
  2. In an open floor plan with adjoining rooms, embracing the home-and-garden trend can help unify the spaces by selecting rugs with complementary colors or patterns, ensuring a cohesive lifestyle throughout your abode.
