Solar-charging station for electric vehicles debuts in District 2 of Bucharest, marking a significant step towards renewable energy usage.
Bucharest's District 2 has made history as the first community in Romania to host a fully autonomous, solar-powered EV ARC charging station. Installed on June 26, 2025, in front of the District 2 City Hall, this groundbreaking station operates entirely off-grid, relying solely on solar energy to charge electric vehicles.
The innovative charging station, a product of a partnership between the Romanian Association for Smart City and Mobility and Seltis Glass Design, can charge two electric cars simultaneously. It is equipped with two 5.5 kW/h charging points, 4.4 kW/h solar panels, and a 40 kW/h battery for energy storage. With a total available charging power of 5.76 kW/h, the station aims to provide a clean, renewable energy source for electric vehicle charging, reducing dependency on traditional energy grids.
Mayor Rareș Hopincă emphasised the significance of this innovation, stating that District 2 is pioneering change by implementing a charging station that requires no connection to the power grid, no construction site, and no bureaucracy. The pilot phase for the charging station in District 2 will not involve any costs for users and will run until September 1, 2025.
During the pilot phase, performance data will be collected and analysed for potential expansion of similar smart solutions across District 2. The project is part of a broader push towards sustainable urban mobility, with the ultimate goal of promoting sustainable urban development and supporting the adoption of electric vehicles within the community.
This initiative sets a precedent in Romania for integrating renewable energy with smart urban infrastructure, potentially influencing future green mobility projects in Bucharest and beyond. The charging station in District 2 is the first in Bucharest to run exclusively on solar energy, marking a significant step towards a greener future for the city.
- The collaboration between the Romanian Association for Smart City and Mobility and Seltis Glass Design has led to the creation of an environmental-science innovation, a solar-powered EV ARC charging station, significantly contributing to the industry of transportation and sustainable-living.
- In line with the goal of promoting sustainable urban development, the autonomous charging station, operating independently of the traditional energy grid, boosts the adoption of electric vehicles in lifestyle choices, thereby reducing the reliance on conventional finance sources for energy.
- The home-and-garden sector may also benefit from such technology as the clean, renewable energy source for electric vehicle charging supports technology advancements and potentially influences the design and production of energy-efficient cars and infrastructure.
- As the first solar-powered charging station in Bucharest, the installation in District 2 sets a precedent for the integration of environmental-science and technology, serving as a potential blueprint for future implementations of sustainable engineering, especially in the realm of cars and electric vehicles.
- The successful pilot phase in District 2 may inspire other communities in Romania to follow suit, ultimately contributing to the expansion of green mobility projects and the transition towards a more sustainable lifestyle and urban environment.
