International Library Tourism: Exploring Stunning, Modern Libraries in Shanghai and Seoul

Sightseeing Excursion: Exploring Libraries in Seoul and Shanghai

A passion for libraries and their unique spaces has developed while working at Harris County Public Library. During recent travels to various countries, including China and Korea, visits to other public libraries havebecome a priority to explore their structures, services, and ambiance.

The modern concept of a library is evolving, with super active children's areas, state-of-the-art labs for Makers, and community-based programming prevalent in libraries across the United States and Asia. In contrast, the libraries visited in Asia focused primarily on materials and culture, located in bustling public spaces designed to attract visitors and inspire creativity.

The Starfield COEX Mall Library, Seoul, South Korea

Beginning with the more aesthetically pleasing of the two libraries explored in Asia, The Starfield COEX Mall Library in Seoul stands out for its seamless fusion of books, culture, and interior design. Its sleek, curved walls, adorned with floor-to-ceiling books, display a mixture of futuristic and organic elements. The warm, wooden Japandi styling adds to its allure, making it an attractive destination for locals and tourists alike.

Books on the library's first floor are arranged like retail stores on large tables grouped by genre, while the rest of the shelving is filled to capacity, with no empty spaces as seen in American libraries. Cozy cafe-style seating and functional work tables are available for computer use, while patrons can also utilize reference computers. The library's integration into a modern shopping environment encourages literacy to become a part of everyday life. Regular events, such as book signings and readings, stimulate patron engagement and foster a strong connection between literacy and daily life.

ZiKaWei Public Library, Shanghai, China

Another remarkable library discovered during the tour is the XuHui neighborhood's ZiKaWei Public Library in Shanghai. Similar to a typical neighborhood branch, it stands out for its stylish design and constant bustle. The library was recently remodeled and boasts ample seating, study areas, tables, and even self-serve UV sanitizers and a reference robot utilizing AI to answer patron questions.

Programming at this library is diverse and catering to various age groups, with events such as community craft markets, book signings, live readings, and urban sketching/scavenger hunts. The library's contemporary architecture combines artificial and natural lighting, blending function with beauty, and offering an immersive experience for visitors.

Although some American libraries incorporate modern technology and programs, few buildings are as immersive or integrated into public life as the Zikawei and Starfield libraries in Asia. These libraries captivate the entire community by creating inviting, stimulating public spaces that bridge the gap between coffee shops, art museums, and libraries.

While American libraries strive to bring their programs, materials, and services to patrons through outreach, it's inspiring to imagine a future where libraries can offer the same level of integration into social and commercial life, resembling the seamless, fluid approach found in these Asian libraries.

The enrichment data provided reveals the existence of additional noteworthy destination libraries around the world, each possessing unique architecture and cultural significance. For readers eager to explore these remarkable spaces, compiling a list of must-visit libraries is recommended.

  1. The integration of technology in library spaces is evident, with image-referencing AI reference robots at ZiKaWei Public Library in Shanghai.
