Scorching Summer in Berlin: Unbearable Heat Hits the Capital!
Sweating Through Summer: The Harrowing Heatwave in Berlin
By Mia Bucher
In wilting heat, Berliners face an unpleasant reality. But how badly are they being scorched?
Let's dive in.
Climate Change Under the Dome
- Berlin swelters through summer as heatwaves sweep the city!
The temperature averages for land and water across Berlin in the summer months surges to a whopping 35.5°C, as per a country-wide summer heat check by the German Environmental Aid. This surpasses temperatures in Flensburg, which clocks in at a cooler 29.4°C. Mannheim reigns as the hottest city in the country at 38.4°C.
- What's cooking down under?
During summer days, the temperature of the ground and water typically exceeds the air temperature, reaching a level comparable to our perceived temperature. This, as per the Environmental Aid, makes for some pretty unpleasant strolling experiences.
- The siege of pavement and greenery
Compared to the nation's total, Berlin sits squarely in the middle when it comes to sealed surfaces (around 44.5%). Greenery, meanwhile, is relatively levelled out. But in urban heat island fashion, sealed surfaces retain more heat, worsening the already baking city scenario.
Mapping the Heat
Which Berlin districts are taking the hardest heat? As many as 12 million residents across Germany are exposed to blistering summer temperatures. Astonishingly, 31 cities receive a red card, 131 a yellow card, and 28 a green card.
In the leafy German capital, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Lichtenberg, and Tempelhof-Schoeneberg are the Kentucky Friedquarters of the heatstorm. Keep in mind that these areas have above-average sealed surfaces. Steglitz-Zehlendorf, Reinickendorf, and Treptow-Koepenick, boasting a higher amount of green spaces, fare better.
Calling All Clear Skies
While North Rhine-Westphalia's supposed to be baking under the sun, stormy weather's brewing over the weekend.
