Revitalization Strategy for Jamaica, Queens, Previously Inhabited by a Noted Figure and Powerbroker

In the heart of Queens, New York, lies a neighbourhood that once held a significant place in American history. Known as Addisleigh Park, this residential area was famously dubbed "Black New York's Gold Coast" due to its impressive roster of residents, many of whom were prominent African American figures in the entertainment industry.

One such resident was William Scarborough, a former state lawmaker who grew up in Jamaica, Queens. Scarborough, now approximately 80 years old, has observed the evolution of his hometown over several decades.

Addisleigh Park, in its heyday, attracted many of the country's foremost performers. Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, and "Godfather of Soul" James Brown were among those who called the neighbourhood home. Scarborough fondly remembers swimming in the pool of a neighbourhood celebrity resident, jazz icon William James "Count" Basie.

However, the landscape of Jamaica, Queens has changed over the years. Poultry, cement, and scrap metal operations now coexist with residential areas, a stark contrast to the glamour and elegance that once defined Addisleigh Park. The densely populated area includes both a bustling downtown district and suburban areas.

Scarborough has expressed concerns about the neglect and environmental racism that have affected the area. Today, Addisleigh Park remains largely residential with some local businesses and small industries, primarily in the retail and service sectors. Yet, the neighbourhood's historical significance as a home to prominent African American figures continues to be celebrated.

As we reflect on the transformation of Addisleigh Park, it serves as a reminder of the rich cultural history that has shaped Queens, and the ongoing efforts to preserve and revitalise these communities.
