Renewed presence of former Kufhof at Nuremberg's location
The city of Nuremberg is breathing new life into its city centre with the opening of a pop-up Ikea store and the Woerl Outlet World (WOW) in the former Kaufhof building. The much-anticipated event took place on October 2, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the city's urban development plans.
The city's Lord Mayor, Marcus Koenig (CSU), and Economic and Science Referent, Andrea Heilmaier, were present at the ceremonial reopening of the shopping centre, which had originally reopened on September 18, 2025. The event was a testament to the city's commitment to enhancing the attractiveness of the city centre.
Over 20,000 guests visited the building in one weekend in April 2025, demonstrating the building's potential and the public's eagerness for its revival. The initiatives in the building aim to liven up the building and its surroundings with a diverse range of offerings, including cultural, commercial, and scientific concepts.
The Woerl Outlet World, which opened earlier in October, offers a wide variety of products at reduced prices, making it an attractive destination for both residents and city guests. The second new retailer, yet to be named, is expected to open in October as well.
Cultural and creative projects, such as the "Galeria Kaufhof" art and design space, have already been implemented in the building. Concerts and pop-up exhibitions have underscored its potential for cultural purposes. The "UTN Science Lounge" of Nuremberg Technical University is now located on the former department store floor, adding an educational and scientific dimension to the building.
Representatives of Ikea, Woerl, Nuremberg Technical University, and "Beets & Roots" were also present at the reopening, signifying their support for the city's vision for the building. The city acquired the property last year for urban development, and the goal is to permanently integrate the Kaufhof area into the city's urban fabric.
The interim uses in the former Kaufhof have filled the building with new life less than a year after the city of Nuremberg took it over. The city's decision to revive the former Kaufhof building sends a powerful signal for the city centre's future, positioning Nuremberg as a vibrant and dynamic city that values its heritage while embracing modernity.
