In the picturesque village of Theale, near Pangbourne and Reading, a historic mill house is making a comeback. Shenfield Mill, with its rich history dating back to medieval times, is now on the market, offering a unique blend of history and modern-day luxury.

Originally a corn and fulling mill in medieval times, Shenfield Mill later became a paper mill in the 19th century. However, a tragic fire in 1877 brought its paper-making days to an end. Fast forward to the 21st century, and the mill-house complex, including the Georgian mill house and outbuildings, is now up for sale at a guide price of £11.5m.

The main house at Shenfield Mill offers more than 7,380 square feet of light-filled accommodation. It includes three reception rooms, a study, a Smallbone kitchen, and four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. The extension at Shenfield Mill includes a triple garage, kitchen and utility area, a glazed link, and a large orangery with a lantern roof and motorised sliding doors. The orangery, approximately 1,200 square feet, is an ideal space for entertaining guests.

The mill ruins are still present and are overlooked by the Georgian mill house whose oldest parts date from 1800. The site of Shenfield Mill has been a mill for a long time, with records dating back to medieval times. The mill-house complex also includes a two-bedroom cottage and a converted three-bedroom studio, providing additional accommodation.

The mill's modern-day history began when Mike Taylor, a keen fisherman, purchased Shenfield Mill in October 2011. During his ownership, Taylor installed a hydro system, which enabled the creation of a 1,200ft natural fish pass, improving the river's ecosystem and making it home to an excellent fishery. A 10ft-diameter Archimedes screw was installed, generating enough power to cover the energy needs of the entire property and export a surplus back to the grid.

Before Taylor and his wife Fran purchased Shenfield Mill, it was the home of up and coming singer Kate Bush. Prior to that, the former owner was Margaret Herbert.

Meanwhile, in a different corner of Britain, Scottie dogs are making a comeback as one of the country's most popular breeds. These charming dogs, with their distinctive appearance, were once a staple in many British households and are now regaining their popularity.

In a separate story, Owen Bush, a 21st-century sword maker, handcrafts both decorative and practical knives or weaponry. His work is admired for its quality and craftsmanship, making him a respected figure in the world of sword making.

Finally, an exhibition featuring some of history's most significant artefacts is currently on display. The exhibition includes the gun used to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Hemingway's typewriter, Captain Scott's snow goggle, and Sgt Pepper's drum. These items offer a fascinating insight into history, providing a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential figures of the past.

Shenfield Mill is for sale via Strutt & Parker, offering a unique opportunity for someone to own a piece of British history and enjoy modern-day luxury. Meanwhile, Scottie dogs and Owen Bush's sword-making continue to captivate audiences, adding to the rich tapestry of British culture.
