Refurbishment endeavor showcases a blend of historic authenticity and casual allure in a Colonial house, characterized by unanticipated elements, notably a kitchen cabinet detail worth imitating.
Transforming a 1930s Colonial into a Relaxed Elegance
In a bid to reimagine a 1938 Colonial, Tom and Mary, the homeowners, embarked on a renovation project that would loosen up the formal, family-forward aesthetic and infuse it with casual, lived-in charm. Heather Peterson, an interior designer, was enlisted to lead the project, ensuring it stayed true to the era while adding character, comfort, and charm.
The transitional kitchen features a harmonious blend of old and new. Traditional white kitchen base units are layered with deep, saturated colors and antique details, creating a timeless yet fresh space. The cabinet curtain fabric, similar to a cafe curtain or skirted kitchen island, adds warmth, movement, and a whisper of nostalgia behind the glass-front kitchen cabinet doors.
The built-in banquette seating just beyond the main kitchen is an updated version of one original to the house. Suspended back cushions, fitted with recessed ring pulls for comfort, soften the formal seating area, making it more inviting. The off-center window in the banquette was balanced out with a pair of the clients' special wall prints.
In the snug room, an olive green tufted ottoman brings a jolt of texture and color. The living spaces showcase a thoughtful mix of high-low and old-new, with vintage-style pieces coexisting harmoniously with contemporary casual furniture. A vintage-style sunflower chandelier in the dining room set the tone for the rest of the project.
The bedrooms showcase Heather's talent for dramatic yet inviting bedroom color ideas. The primary bedroom features chocolate brown walls, while the guest room boasts matching yellow bedroom throws. The home, originally a formal Colonial, has been transformed into an inviting, character-filled space with a relaxed elegance woven into every detail.
Mark Larson Rehkamp Larson, the architects, did a beautiful job of creating hidden storage in the pantry wall and including thoughtful details like retractable doors and stepping the upper kitchen cabinets back to create dimension and diminish the bulk. The end result is a home that feels layered, personal, and effortlessly inviting.
