Prepare Your Garden for Winter: October's Key Tasks

Autumn is here, and it's time to prepare our gardens for the winter ahead. The YouTube channel 'My Garden. Garten und Gemüsebeet' has shared some practical tips for autumn garden care and vegetable bed preparation. Let's dive into the key tasks for this month.

October is a crucial month for flower bed preparation. Start by pruning hydrangeas, irises, and astilbes. For astilbes, wait until after the first frosts. Roses can be mounded up, but it's best to wait on the cover. Other plants like clematis, hydrangeas, and peonies should be mounded up and covered for winter protection.

Before storage, leave tubers and rhizomes to dry in a dark, dry place for 5 days. For bulbs and annuals, plant them when the soil temperature at 10 cm depth is between 5-9 degrees. Carefully dig up geraniums, gladioli, and calla lilies for winter storage. After planting, mulch the beds with dry peat.

Fertilize the lawn and sow any bare patches in autumn. Prune the raspberry patch at the roots in October to encourage berry production next season.

With these tasks completed, our gardens will be well-prepared for the winter ahead. Remember, October is the most important month for these preparations. Happy gardening!
