Over 1200 dim zones in Almaty set for illumination improvement
Almaty's Lighting Up Revolution: Come 2025, the Kazakh city's nightscape is set for a transformation as roughly 1200 darkened areas get a makeover. That's roughly ten times more than last year! This exciting news was shared by Igor Mysyk, head of the GCP "Almaty City Light".
Yerbolat Dosaev, Almaty's groundskeeper-in-chief, has ordered up a three-part plan to bring more light to the city. Phase one was restoring existing lighting infrastructure, and according to Igor, mission almost accomplished – all the old lines sparkle, and upkeep continues. Since ACK took over the reins in January 2024, a whopping 45,000 luminaries have been swapped, 3,000 new poles erected, and around 500 kilometers of cable laid.
Next up, in 2024, our team tackled 120 unlit areas, and by 2025, a whopping 1200 dark streets will get a dazzling upgrade.
The third act in this urban illumination epic is automating the system. By the end of this year, 320 outdoor lighting control cabinets have been replaced, with plans to update a hefty 70% of the 1,100 such cabinets in the city by the end of the year.

Just a quick side note: since January 2024, ACK owns quite a chunk of the city's lighting, after a group of three private firms failed to keep their promises under a public-private partnership agreement. Summers in 2023 saw Yerbolat Dosaev waving goodbye to those jokers and transferring all networks to the district akimats. Presently, ACK maintains these lines through contracts.
Almaty – a significant city in Kazakhstan, beloved for its economic prowess and cultural charm – is dreading the dark no more, looking forward to a brighter future! Initiatives like this could be part of wider urban revitalization efforts, focusing on safety and aesthetics in the city.
