Outdoor Voices' founder Ty Haney returns with a fresh collection for the activewear brand
Outdoor Voices Relaunches Under New Leadership
After a year of acquisition by Consortium Brand Partners and a period of reimagining, Outdoor Voices is set to make a comeback. The activewear brand, known for its unique blend of style and functionality, is relaunching under the return of its founder, Tyler Haney.
Haney, who famously resigned from Outdoor Voices in 2020 amid financial challenges and reports of conflict with Mickey Drexler, is now a partner and co-owner of the brand. The future plan centers on revitalizing Outdoor Voices with a fresh, confident, bold, and sexy vision, positioning the activewear as the "uniform for doing things."
Over the past nine months, Haney has been working on a new collection that honors Outdoor Voices’ heritage while introducing fresh, innovative designs aimed to appeal to new and core consumers. The collection emphasizes technically credible, functional materials meant for movement, embracing an intersection of designer and activewear with elevated details typical of high-end fashion.
The relaunch was marked by wiping the brand’s social media clean, signaling a bold restart, and the first product drop includes limited-edition items like a diamante-adorned sweatshirt reading "Doing Things." The new collection, expected to debut on Aug. 4, is described as "fashion-y" and having a perspective, while retaining the original brand's sensibility.
Consortium Brand Partners has plans to open Outdoor Voices locations in the future, possibly in 2025. The brand will initially focus on a direct-to-consumer (DTC) approach with goals to diversify distribution and pursue global growth over time.
In a video reintroducing herself, Haney acknowledges that she was "a lot younger" when she founded the company and calls herself "a baby girl" straight out of college. Despite the challenges faced in the past, Haney expresses optimism about reclaiming a unique market position in the crowded activewear industry by focusing on a broad "recreation" identity rather than a narrow segment.
Ashley Merrill took over as chairwoman of Outdoor Voices in 2020. The initial collection will honor Outdoor Voices' heritage and heart, according to the company. Outdoor Voices was sparking bankruptcy speculation and shuttering its 15 stores in 2022, but under the new leadership, it seems the brand is poised for a fresh start.
