More Art and Culture to Devour in the Big Apple this Summer!

Newly renovated Frick Collection unveils inaugural special exhibition at its revamped headquarters, starting next week.

New York City has an art-filled season ahead! After the rejuvenation of the Upper East Side, the famed Frick Collection is set to unveil a new exhibition titled "Love Letters of Vermeer" starting June 18, 2025.

Xavier F. Salomon, Deputy Director, expressed his enthusiasm, "Following our relaunch on April 17, it's only fitting that we debut our new special exhibition galleries, designed by Selldorf Architects, with a deep dive into Vermeer, one of our most popular artists. 'Lady and Maid,' the last masterpiece that our museum's founder, Henry Clay Frick, acquired before his demise, will anchor this tribute to his collecting legacy."

For the first time, "The Love Letter" from the Rijksmuseum, originally from Amsterdam, will be displayed alongside "Woman Writing a Letter with Her Maid," currently at the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, alongside Frick's "Lady and Maid."

This exhibition aims to shed light on letter writing and exchange in the 17th century, as revealed by the collection's press department. Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen, Axel Rüger, the exhibition's director, shared further insights, stating, "This is the first Vermeer exhibition in New York since 2001, devoted to works by one of the world's most revered artists."

Axel added, "We're grateful to Dr. Robert Fucci, a distinguished scholar specializing in 17th-century Dutch art from the University of Amsterdam, for his contributions to this show and the accompanying catalog."

While you're exploring the Frick Collection, don't forget to check out what other art experiences the city has in store this summer:

  • Brooklyn Museum: Featuring "Melissa Joseph. ‘Tender’" from June 6 to November 2, 2025.
  • The Guggenheim Museums and Foundation: Offering a variety of exhibitions, including "By Way Of: Material and Motion in the Guggenheim Collection," "Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910–1930," and "Collection in Focus | Piet Mondrian: A Retrospective."
