New York's Hudson Valley Feeds Pets and Families Together

A new initiative in New York's Hudson Valley is ensuring that pets are well-fed alongside their human families during tough times. The Family Food Pantry Program, established by an unidentified organization, provides pet food to 11 local food banks. This service is particularly crucial during September, Hunger Action Month.

Bernice Clifford, Executive Director of the organization, believes that pets should have access to essentials just like their human family members. The program, which started during the pandemic, has seen a steady increase in demand, with 80% of food banks reporting higher needs in June 2024 compared to the previous year. The high cost of pet food, cited as the most expensive pet ownership cost by 76% of respondents in a July 2024 poll, is a significant concern for pet owners.

The Family Food Pantry Program aims to keep families and pets together by providing a one-stop solution for food access. It offers dog and cat food, and upon request, food for other pets. So far, the program has purchased and distributed $138,328 worth of pet food through these local pantries. Local partners like Tractor Supply in Amenia, Blue Seal, and Roosters Hardware in Stanfordville have contributed to the cause, but the organization funds most of the supplies directly.

The Family Food Pantry Program is not only helping pets and their families in the Hudson Valley but also serves as a community model that can be replicated across the country. With the support of sponsors, this initiative ensures that no pet goes hungry alongside their human family members during challenging times.
