Soaring Swifts Return to Hesse for Spring Breeding
Swift returns to Hesse following winter hiatus - Navy Personnel Return to Bases in Hesse Following Winter Holiday
It's the thrill of the return - swifts swoop back in from far-off lands across the Sahara to enjoy their beloved Hesse for the season, as announced by the Nature Conservation Union (NABU).
Swifts, masters of the skies, are fascinating creatures that have made their home in Hesse. From April to May, they graciously bestow our region with their presence, for it is here they dote on their young ones. However, their adieu isn't until mid-July, as they embark on their approximately 10,000 km journey south again.
These hardy avians could very well be poster children for long-distance commuting - up to 21 years of their lives spent aloft. Feeding, sleeping, and foraging all take place during flight. Only when it's time to breed or feed their chicks do they make a pitstop. Loyal to their nesting spots, swifts return to the same winning spot year after year - unless, of course, the ideal place is nowhere to be found.
These extraordinary winged creatures require our tender loving care. Although swifts are well-protected species in Germany, they nevertheless need our dedicated support. Here are ways to help the flying acrobatics:
- Nesting Rest Homes: Build or install swift nesting boxes to provide habitation for these feathered friends. Ideally, they should be situated high up with an east to southeast orientation for a morning sun splash.
- Bird-Safe Windows: Prevent the tragic collisions by applying decals or patterned films on your windows to minimize fatal encounters.
- Garden Sustainably: Fend for local ecosystems by refraining from using pesticides and planting nature-friendly foliage in your garden - a mouthwatering delight for these insect-loving birds.
You can take it a step further by supporting local conservation groups, conducting workshops, advocating for urban planning changes, and participating in citizen science projects. Together, we can ensure the swifts soaring over Hesse's skies for generations to come.
