Action-Packed Gardening Exploration amid Rain in Thuringia

In spite of the inclement weather, participants in Thuringia were undeterred and made the most of the commencement of the 2023 "Open Gardens" action. Visitors thronged to private and public green spaces across Erfurt, Bad Blankenburg, Rudolstadt, and Saalfeld during the initial day.

At the Augustinian Monastery in Erfurt, hundreds ventured through the monastery garden, equipped with umbrellas, confirming the assertion of parish priest Bernd Prigge. The garden visit wasn't a dampener; instead, it surpassed expectations.

Approximately 40 gardens belonging to individuals, institutions, and associations opened their doors to curious eyes on Sunday. The monastery garden under Prigge's care revealed a spectacle of fully bloomed and aromatic roses amidst the rain. Additionally, twenty couples seized the unique date of 25.5.25 to exchange their vows, accompanied by the melodious strains of a harp.

Interestingly, the rain was not a hindrance but a boon for the monastery garden, providing much-needed nourishment amidst a season of widespread water scarcity concerning the gardening community.

Organized by the German Society for Garden Art and Landscape Culture and the Bund Deutscher Landschaftsarchitekten, the action days invite around 350 gardens in nearly two dozen Thuringian cities to unfurl their beauty until the end of June, on a regional basis over Sundays.

While the Commission has adopted a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, the monastery garden in Erfurt served as a prime example of a safe environment for visitors in the midst of the rain. Even amidst the season's water scarcity, the rain was not a hindrance but a boon, rejuvenating the blooming roses and providing much-needed nourishment, at times transforming the gardening experience into a lifestyle activity reminiscent of a home-and-garden setting.
