Maatam Set to Establish Permanent Sustainability Center in Kerala

Maatam, a sustainability initiative born in Kerala, has been growing since 2019. Inspired by the plastic problem in Bali, co-founder Visakha G Raj envisioned a change in her home state. Now, a group called 'Bürger:innen, Vereine' plans to make Maatam a permanent community center promoting sustainable practices.

Maatam began as an idea among friends, fresh out of college, aiming to spread sustainability messages. Their first event in 2022 transformed an abandoned colonial house in Fort Kochi into a free market for green ideas. The event featured upcycled homeware stalls, climate change workshops, waste conversations, and music.

Looking ahead, Maatam is planning its next main event for early 2026 at the old GCD building on Marine Drive Road. This choice reinforces Maatam's commitment to reusing existing resources. The community center aspires to connect various stakeholders - government, institutions, companies, and the public - to promote sustainability. Maatam seeks to become a platform connecting sustainable vendors with customers, raising climate change awareness, and reusing resources like abandoned buildings.

Maatam, started by young visionaries, is set to establish a permanent community center. This hub will foster everyday sustainability practices, connecting stakeholders and promoting a greener Kerala.
