Luenen Leads in Safe School Routes with 'Early Bird' Campaign and 'Temporary School Street' Trial

Luenen is leading the way in safe and independent school routes, launching the 'Early Bird' campaign and implementing a 'temporary school street' traffic trial during the European Mobility Week (EMW) from September 16 to 22, 2025. The campaign focuses on encouraging climate-friendly travel to school and strengthening school mobility management.

The 'Early Bird' campaign, part of the statewide project 'EMW makes school - in your municipality', is being piloted in Luenen. It aims to promote safe and independent school routes, with Mayor Jürgen Kleine-Frauns hoping Luenen's example will set a precedent for other municipalities. The campaign involves distributing updated information flyers to schools and students decorating the path to school using the 'Playway' action box.

Luenen is one of three pilot municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia, along with Jülich and Krefeld, supported by creative service providers Kplus, Tonka Communication, and Atelier Link. The project is under the patronage of NRW Minister of Education Dorothee Feller and NRW Minister of Transport Oliver Krischer for EMW 2025.

Luenen's innovative approach to school mobility during EMW 2025 is expected to catalyze concrete climate change topics in cities and communities, strengthening school climate management and promoting climate-friendly travel to school.
