Don't Snooze on This! The Iconic Karlsruhe Landmark is Shutting Down Temporarily
Long-standing Karlsruhe landmark is compelled to shut down.
Time's a-ticking: The notorious landmark of Karlsruhe is set to close for business, and it won't be reopening anytime soon. If you're anxious to catch a glimpse of the city from a bird's eye view, you'd better act fast.
Long Pending Upgrade: Technology reminiscent of the '60s needs refreshing
Karlsruhe's famed attraction, the Schlossturm, will be off-limits to tourists from September 28, 2025. Behind this closure lies an extensive restoration project of the Baden State Museum within the castle. The revamp is expected to gawk for years, leaving the popular tower out of service during this tenure. The once proud castle now harbors water pipe leaks, outdated machinery, and shabby building materials, making an immediate facelift essential. A significant overhaul has been due since the '60s, but now, it's finally happening — even if it means denying visitors the spectacular city's view for a spell.
However, the tower will remain accessible until the commotion starts: Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., and Fridays through Sundays, as well as public holidays, until 5:15 p.m. Those craving to witness the vista from 42 meters above sea level have to ascend 165 steps before the renovation — an adventure not readily available for the foreseeable future. Even after the epic facelift, the iconic Schlossturm won't be wheelchair-accessible. Museum spokeswoman Katrin Lorbeer shed light on the issue, stating that the tower's structure won't allow for adaptations due to its restricted space, tortuous turns, and historical significance.

According to museum director Eckart Köhne, the structural portion of the renovation is projected to last six to seven years. Post-renovation, all (over 12,000) exhibits need to be placed back into the museum halls, a laborious process. Therefore, it won't be less than a decade until the Schlossturm reopens. If you're eager to behold the stunning cityscape, don't hesitate any longer!
