Long-standing in the Allgäu area:
The picturesque town of Wertach in Bavaria, Germany, is gearing up for the annual Viehscheid event, scheduled to take place on September 18, 2025. This traditional cattle drive, one of the oldest and largest in the Allgäu region, attracts thousands of spectators every year.
In 2024, the festival was hosted by Felix Widenmayer, Sepp Kroenauer (Schoenegger Kaese-Alm), and Lubica Riedmiller. The event saw 719 animals return to the 2,800-inhabitant municipality at the Scheidplatz on Grüntenseestraße. The herds of the six alps arrived between 8.30 and 11.30 am, with around 700 cattle in total.
However, this year, there will be a change as the festival tent will not be present due to the withdrawal of Felix Widenmayer, Sepp Kroenauer, and Lubica Riedmiller. Financial reasons were cited by Felix Widenmayer as the cause for this decision.
Despite the absence of the festival tent, visitors can still look forward to a vibrant Krämermarkt. This market, located around the town hall up to the Scheidplatz at the fire station (Grüntenseestraße 27), will feature up to 70 stalls offering regional delicacies such as herbs, spices, honey, pine pillows, traditional clothing, sweets, and sausages.
For those planning to visit Wertach by train, the Oy-Mittelberg station is the closest. A bus service is available to take you to Wertach. Visitors can also park at several locations in Wertach on the day of the cattle drive, including the meadow opposite the Feneberg market, the industrial area, Bahnhofstraße, Wertach West roundabout, and St. Sebastian's chapel.
The alphorn blowing will start at the Wertacher Scheidplatz around 8.30 am, marking the beginning of the event. The Gruentenseestraße from the Feneberg market will be closed to traffic during the alpine descent between 8.30 and 14.00.
The Viehscheid in Wertach is not just a cattle drive but a celebration of tradition and community. It's a chance to immerse oneself in the rich culture of the Allgäu region and witness a spectacle that has been a part of this town's history for centuries. So, mark your calendars for September 18, 2025, and join the festivities in Wertach.
