Italian Evangelical Alliance Marks Milestones in Unity, Mission, and Leadership
The Italian Evangelical Alliance (AEI) has seen significant changes and milestones since the 1980s. In 2017, AEI raised concerns about ecumenical compromise with Roman Catholicism, while also fostering cooperation with other religious expressions. Meanwhile, the magazine Idea ceased regular publication, but the AEI newsletter, IdeaItalia, resumed in 1997.
During the 1990s, AEI began celebrating several annual events, including the Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, the International Week of Prayer, and Remembrance Sunday, starting in 1996. This period also saw the intertwining of the Lausanne Covenant and the Manila Manifesto in the service of evangelical unity and mission. AEI organised public events, with a rally in 1999 attracting a thousand people. The AEI calendar continues to invite evangelical churches to gather for special events focusing on religious liberty, prayer, and remembrance of evangelical history.
The AEI's leadership has seen changes over the years. After a period of institutional uncertainty with multiple presidents between 1988 and 2013, Giacomo Ciccone took over as president, leading to a period of revitalisation.
Today, AEI maintains a consistent critique of Roman Catholicism while working together with other religious expressions for the common good. The organisation continues to celebrate annual events and promote religious liberty, with Giacomo Ciccone at the helm since 2013.
