In the city of Nordhorn, apprenticeship opportunities abound in six diverse fields, including gardening. One such apprentice, Hilke Stevens, recently embarked on an extraordinary journey as part of an apprentice exchange program.

Stevens, a 21-year-old apprentice gardener specializing in garden and landscape construction, spent nearly two weeks on the Island of Mainau this summer. Located on the edge of Lake Constance near Constance, Mainau is renowned as the 'Flower Island,' offering unique nature experiences.

Heinz Jülicher, the trainer of the gardeners on the island, welcomed Stevens into his team. During her stay, Stevens had the opportunity to work alongside her host gardeners and gain practical knowledge about exotic plants that she wouldn't encounter in Nordhorn.

One of the highlights of her experience was the Italian flower water staircase, a stunning architectural feature on the island. Stevens was also captivated by the impressive giant sequoias that grace the island. Mainau's botanical garden boasts around 1200 different rose varieties, another sight to behold.

Stevens documented her experience for her exchange report, detailing the significant differences she observed between the climate and plants at the Bodensee and those in North Germany. Upon her return, she presented her report to Reinhold Schnieders from the Green Department of the city of Nordhorn.

Schnieders, who considers the initiative for training an ideal complement to his previous training program, was impressed by Stevens' findings. He believes that such exchanges enrich the apprentices' training and broaden their horizons.

In fact, Stevens is the first apprentice of the city's gardening department to participate in an exchange program. She believes that the practical knowledge gained from the experience has enriched her training and will undoubtedly benefit her future career.

The city of Nordhorn offers six different apprenticeships in addition to gardening, providing a wide range of opportunities for young individuals seeking to start their careers. For Stevens, the apprentice exchange program was a valuable experience that she will cherish for years to come.
