Interview Conversation with Bethany Clark
Bethany Clark, a South Australian writer and editor, has made a splash in the children's literature scene with her latest picture book, "Little Love List". The book, published earlier this year, follows the heartwarming bond between a parent and child, capturing the magic of everyday moments and helping normalize the emotional rollercoaster of life with small children.
Clark's debut picture book, "You've Got Yoghurt in Your Nostrils", was inspired by watching her son learn to eat solid foods. The book aims to normalize the mess that babies make during learning to eat. If Clark hadn't been writing picture books, she might have pursued photography or painting as creative outlets.
The inspiration behind "Little Love List" is less clear, but it seems the story originated from a list of ways Clark and her son loved each other, told each night before bed. The book has been described as a feminist manifesto disguised as a picture book, subtly promoting inclusivity and love.
When not writing, Clark enjoys unwinding in Stansbury, a seaside town on Yorke Peninsula. She is planning to start writing retreats at her house in Stansbury later this year, offering fellow writers a tranquil space to work and be inspired.
Clark approaches finding the right balance between humor and heartfelt moments by reflecting everyday experiences with small children that can be both tricky and hilarious. Her picture books celebrate messy mealtimes and everyday childhood moments, making them relatable and endearing to young readers.
Despite her love for art, Clark admits she spends too much money on buying art instead of painting herself. It's clear, however, that her creative spirit shines through in her writing, making her a valuable addition to the children's literature world.
As Clark continues to create and inspire, we look forward to seeing what stories she will share next.
In her free time, Bethany Clark enjoys immersing herself in home-and-garden books, finding inspiration for her future writing retreats. When she's not engrossed in these, she indulges in entertainment, seeking humor and heartfelt moments in various media to fuel her creative lifestyle.
