Insufficient Greenery: Krasnoyarsk Slightly Augments as an Urban Environment

Unleashing the Urban Vibe of Krasnoyarsk in 2024

Krasnoyarsk, the eastern powerhouse of Russia with a million souls, has shown a slight uptick in its urban environment for 2024. Every year, federal experts meticulously assess and report on the city's progress. In the 2024 rankings, Krasnoyarsk bagged 214 points, a modest increase from its 2023 score of 208.

The Urban Environment Quality Index, as determined by the Ministry of Construction and DOM.RF, evaluates 1,116 cities of diverse status and population, averaging 220 points. The experts contend that a "friendly environment" begins at 200.

Comparing the 2024 rankings to 2023, Krasnoyarsk saw a 20-point boost, moving from 200 to 220 points.

Minister of Construction and Utilities Irek Faizullin applauded this achievement, stating, "We reached the initial national goal of increasing the Index by 30% in 2024. We used the Index as a crucial tool for regional development. This year, 18% more cities enjoyed a friendly environment, and 205 cities improved their livability."

Moscow (312 points), Saint Petersburg (283), and Kazan (254) top the list among major cities in terms of urban environment, followed by Krasnoyarsk (214) at the fourth position.

The regional heavyweights, Samara (213), Volgograd (184), and Omsk (183), follow closely behind, while Novosibirsk edges out Krasnoyarsk with a score of 223 for the year.

The experts gauge cities based on several factors, including housing and adjacent spaces, road infrastructure, green spaces, public infrastructure, recreational spaces, and the overall urban environment. Krasnoyarsk shines particularly bright in the overall urban environment category, earning 42 points. The remaining categories score between 32 and 41 points.

Despite being a city nestled in Siberian forests, Krasnoyarsk lags significantly in the green spaces category, earning only 27 points, just half of what is desired.

Krasnoyarsk is not the only city in the region striving for improvement in its urban environment. In fact, in 2023, as in the previous year, Nyosel'sk (243 points) outranked Krasnoyarsk. Other cities with higher urban environment scores in the Kransnoyarsk Krai include, among others, Du Defa (246 points), Sozevoefborsk (241 points), Shyr'yopov (231 points), Nazarov (225 points), Zel'yenogorsk (214 points), Divnygorok (208 points), Minisinsk (202 points), Zaozer'ny (199 points), Zheleznogorsk (193 points), Achyinsk (180 points), Yuror (180 points), Uyar (180 points), Borodin (180 points), Kansk (180 points), Lesosibirsk (179 points), Ilansk (178 points), and Ikarka (178 points). Iltarnovsk and Armenkovsk had scores of 162 and 160 points, respectively.

Small towns too have room for growth. Plans for the development of key municipalities, which the region is working on, should help improve the urban environment in Siberia's heartland.
