In the posh Karagaily microdistrict of Almaty, residents have been grappling with abysmal internet and mobile connectivity for years, leaving their children at a disadvantage during online education. Frustrated with the lack of progress, these families have been reaching out to telecom companies to no avail.
The picturesque cottage village, inhabited by 29 families, each with school-aged children and students, has been battling this issue since its establishment. Resident Jeanne Aldaniayeva shares her struggle: "The internet speed is so slow, it's nearly impossible to send or receive files needed for their homework."
The village was constructed two years ago, but residents claim there's been no improvement in internet quality since then. They've grown accustomed to spotty connectivity and the frequent absence of any signal at all. Late July brought promises from representatives that the internet would finally be connected, but as of now, the issue remains unsolved.
"This is our toughest fight—getting attention for this issue," lamented another resident. "How do we raise awareness and ensure it doesn't get any worse?"
With the pandemic accelerating the shift to online learning, these families find themselves running around their homes, chasing a signal to access their children's education.
After reaching out to the telecommunications company, we learned that the lack of internet connectivity stems from a missed request during the construction phase. The company acknowledged that because the builders did not request technical conditions for internet connectivity, services cannot be provided.
Although the company has suggested installing a radiomost or base station to improve mobile connectivity, the solution comes with a hefty price tag that might fall on the residents themselves since the sector is private.
When it comes to improving internet and mobile connectivity in areas like the Karagaily microdistrict, barriers like geographical location, limited infrastructure, and economic constraints often come into play.
