Incoming digital nomads lead to displacement of retirees in Mexico
Mazatlán, a vibrant city located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, is rapidly gaining popularity among digital nomads and retirees from the United States and Canada. The city's rich cultural heritage, beautiful beach views, affordable lifestyle, and improving infrastructure make it an appealing destination for those seeking a blend of work-friendly and leisure environments [1][2].
Key factors contributing to Mazatlán's allure include its strong digital nomad infrastructure, with high-speed internet access and a conducive atmosphere for networking through bars and cafes [1]. The city's accessibility, with an international airport offering expanding air service from major Canadian cities, is another significant draw, especially for retirees and digital nomads from North America [2].
The city's Centro Histórico (historic center) and local culture offer immersive experiences beyond typical beach vacations, including local cuisine, cultural districts, and new eco-tourism activities [2][1]. Affordable street food, beaches ranging from tourist hotspots to more local experiences, and ongoing hospitality development (including new hotels and expansions) blend affordability with comfort and modern conveniences [1][2].
With an upswing in cruise tourism and the city's branding efforts highlighting its unique character, there is a rising international presence and community, which especially attracts retirees and remote workers looking for vibrant yet laid-back destinations [2]. Notably, Mazatlán is home to one of the largest communities of "repatriates" from the US and Canada [3].
However, the city's rapid growth has not been without challenges. Despite the construction of more than a thousand apartment towers, many of these developments are being built illegally [4]. Moreover, the high cost of living in Mazatlán is becoming a significant challenge for retirees living off their retirement and social security checks [5][6].
In 2023, 5.4 million people visited Mazatlán, according to the Ministry of Tourism in Sinaloa [7]. As the city continues to grow, it remains to be seen how it will navigate these challenges and maintain its appeal for digital nomads and retirees.
