Almaty Airport has embarked on a significant noise insulation program for homes in the vicinity of its runway, as part of its broader modernization plan called the Horizon project. The initiative, which started in 2025, aims to reduce the impact of aircraft noise on residential areas and improve living conditions for affected residents [1][3].

So far, 20 houses have been insulated as part of this program, with a goal of 100 homes by the end of 2025 and an expansion to 300 homes in the future[1][3]. This ambitious project is part of a $1.7 billion investment to upgrade the airport's infrastructure, including runways, terminals, and environmental protections, with the aim of achieving these improvements by 2050 [2].

The Horizon project, innovative for Central Asia, reflects a commitment to social and environmental responsibility measures [1][3]. The noise insulation program is part of a comprehensive aviation noise management plan, with features like soundproof windows and mineral wool being used for insulation [1].

In addition to the noise insulation program, the first phase of the Horizon project includes the reconstruction of the internal terminal, the construction of a new runway and taxiway, as well as the development of a fuel terminal, a hotel, a multi-level car park, and a logistics hub [2]. The investment volume for this initial phase is $362 million.

The program focuses on homes in areas where noise levels exceed 60 decibels at night [1]. Gökçek Kose, the president of the airport, announced the program at the Horizon project launch ceremony [1]. It is worth noting that the program does not affect the requirement for shoe removal during security screening in US airports, nor does it relate to the liquids allowed in carry-on luggage in EU airports [1].

This large-scale noise insulation program at Almaty Airport is in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, demonstrating the airport's commitment to maintaining international safety and efficiency standards. The Horizon project, with its ambitious goals and focus on social and environmental responsibility, is set to transform Almaty Airport into a modern and sustainable hub for aviation in Central Asia.

People living in the home-and-garden sector of vicinity homes near Almaty Airport's runway may appreciate the improvements to their lifestyle, as the Horizon project includes a noise insulation program aimed at reducing aircraft noise. The initiative, which started in 2025, intends to insulate 100 homes by the end of the year and extend to 300 homes in the future.
