District of Harz acquires Brocken peak for 3.5 million euros - Harz district purchases Brocken-Cuppe for a total of 3.5 million euros.

Mark your calendars! In a landmark move aimed at bolstering tourism, Harz County has sealed a deal to purchase Brocken Peak for a whopping 3.5 million euros. Set to take effect on July 1, 2025, the acquisition encompasses two plots of land measuring 12,937 square meters, including famous structures like the Brocken Tower, Tourist Hall, and Weather House. The current owners, Brocken Administration and Marketing GmbH & Co. KG, will bid farewell once the transfer is complete.

County Administrator Thomas Balcerowski hails the June 12, 2025, as a monumental day, comparable to milestones such as the construction of Germany's first television tower on the Brocken in 1936 and the mountain's opening following German reunification in 1989. Balcerowski envisions a sustainable future for the famed tourist beacon, boasting panoramic views, steeped in myths and legends.

The ambitious plan unfolds with a primary goal of enhancing the offerings and quality of the mountainous region through essential infrastructure investments. Expect a state-of-the-art multi-purpose hall for theater performances, conferences, or events that can accommodate up to 500 people. Furthermore, a new reception building, designed with barrier-free access to the multi-purpose hall, is in the works. This new facility will also connect to existing structures like the Goethe Hall and Tourist Hall for seamless navigation.

The alterations are not limited to visitor facilities. Balcerowski seeks to shore up the Brocken Railway, an 1899-opened narrow-gauge line that offers breathtaking rides to the peak but currently restricts access to private vehicles, hiking, and cycling. Balcerowski anticipates the improved Brocken will draw more visitors, ultimately securing the jobs of the 250 employees at Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting transformation!
