==============================================================

Embark on a fruitful fall gardening journey with our comprehensive guide to fall vegetable gardening. This month, the "Green Thumb" Program, hosted by the Harris County Public Library, focuses on Fall Vegetable Gardening, with expert Teresa See leading the July edition.

Preparing Your Garden

To create a thriving fall vegetable garden, it's essential to consider several factors. Firstly, choose an area with decent air circulation and good drainage for your vegetable crops. It's always a good idea to incorporate compost and mulch in a vegetable garden, as they enrich the soil and promote healthy plant growth.

Plant Selection

When it comes to fall planting, group vegetable plants according to their frost tolerance for successful gardening. Vegetable crops require at least 8 hours of direct sunlight each day, so make sure your chosen location meets this requirement.

Essential Nutrients

Plants need 17 essential nutrients for growth and reproduction, which can be broadly categorised as macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients, such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfur (S), are needed in larger quantities and play fundamental roles in the structure and metabolism of plants.

Micronutrients, including iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), chlorine (Cl), and nickel (Ni), are needed in trace amounts but are equally essential for specific biochemical and physiological roles.

Organic products are preferred for fertilizers as they follow nature's laws, leading to healthier plants.

Watering and Irrigation

Watering times are best for plants early in the morning to reduce water loss due to evaporation. Use a soaker hose and a timer to ensure that plants are sufficiently hydrated at the root level.
