Taking Care of Your Pothos Plant: A Comprehensive Guide

Getting a pothos plant is an excellent choice for a beginner gardener. Known colloquially as Devil's Ivy, this versatile vine is easy to care for, requires minimal attention, and can thrive in various conditions. However, there are some key elements to remembering when tending your pothos to keep it healthy and prevent unfortunate issues.

Understanding Your Pothos VarietiesPothos comes in several varieties, but some have become more popular in recent times. When purchasing a pothos plant, it will likely fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Golden Pothos: This houseplant staple is instantly recognizable due to its heart-shaped leaves and slight gold hue.
  2. Manjula Pothos: Marked by white streaks on the leaves, manjula exhibits more variation than other types. Its leaves can be white or marbled and are broader than many pothos plants.
  3. Jade Pothos: The jade pothos resembles the golden variety with heart-shaped leaves but keeps a more solid green color.

Caring for Your PothosRegardless of the specific variety, caring for pothos follows a similar routine:

WateringPothos doesn't require a strict watering schedule, but overwatering can be deadly. According to Karen Musgrave, an associate at Hicks Nurseries, "Pothos is a very easy plant to grow, but its number one killer is overwatering." Check the soil by sticking your finger about an inch down. If it's dry, water it. If unsure, wait and check the soil tomorrow. When watering, Lisa Steinkopf, founder of The Houseplant Guru, recommends pouring water until it drains out of the bottom of the pot. After about 30 minutes, remove excess water to prevent standing in water.

SoilPothos prefers soil with good drainage. Choose a mix containing ingredients like peat moss, worm castings, and perlite, says Musgrave.

Sunlight and TemperaturePothos grow best in medium, indirect light. However, it can tolerate low light conditions as well. direct sun next to a south window might be too intense and cause leaf burn for plants with a lot of white areas. Pothos prefer an average humidity climate that stays above 50 degrees. Avoid placing the plant too close to a heater or air conditioner.

RepottingYou won't need to repot your pothos often, but it's important to transfer it when it outgrows its current pot. Steinkopf suggests repotting when roots are visible through the drainage holes or when watering needs to occur more often. Select a container that's just two inches larger than the previous one. After planting the pothos in the new pot, add potting soil, press down to remove air pockets, and then water well.

PruningPruning isn't mandatory but can help with your pothos' overall appearance. If the leaves on the lower part of the plant turn yellow, it may be an indication for pruning. Remove the affected sections down to an inch from the soil line, and the plant will regenerate.

PropagatingPropagating is the method of choice for growing more pothos plants. Neither of the experts consulted recommended growing pothos from seed, making propagation an excellent option. Take a section of stem about 3 to 6 inches long where a leaf meets the stem. Remove lower leaves to prevent rot, place the cutting in water until roots develop, and then plant in soil.

Common ProblemsOverwatering is pothos' biggest enemy, causing yellowing leaves. Additionally, problems like mealybug and scale may appear. Steinkopf suggests wiping these pests off and utilizing insecticidal soap or adding a systemic insecticide to the soil to remove them.

  1. Martha Stewart, being a known gardening enthusiast, might find the golden Pothos, a staple houseplant with heart-shaped leaves and a slight gold hue, an ideal addition to her garden.
  2. For those who prefer a more unique Pothos plant, the Manjula variety, characterized by white streaks on the leaves, could be an excellent choice, as its leaves can exhibit various colors including white or marbled.
  3. To ensure the jade Pothos, which resembles the golden variety with heart-shaped leaves but maintains a more solid green color, thrives, you should follow the instructions for watering, soil, sunlight and temperature, and repotting.
  4. If encountering common problems such as overwatering, which causes yellowing leaves, or pests like mealybug or scale, it's sure to help by understanding the ideal growing conditions, being vigilant about watering, and knowing how to prune or propagate your Pothos vine.
