Rules for Biergarten, Cafes, and Similar Establishments: - Guidelines for Behavior at Beer Garden, Café & Co.
Hangin' Out at Beer Gardens, Cafes, and Co. - Dos and Don'ts
*
Warm weather rolls around, and our favorite outdoor spots - beer gardens, cafes, and restaurants - become bustling hubs. But what are the rules of the game? Here's a lighthearted guide.
Sunshine: The Great Divider
Luisa Hahn, Director of the "Deidesheimer Hof," insists on understanding and patience as the key to a harmonious experience in garden restaurants. "Keep in mind that while some folks dig the sun, others prefer the shade. The sun umbrella doesn't respond to everyone's needs." Be patient, and remember your place might not always be available.
Christian "Chako" Habekost agrees - bring an umbrella for sun protection! "At 30 degrees, even the last shade spot gets taken, and nothing's worse than a heatstroke in a garden restaurant. Too many people!"
Pleasant, Not Pounded
"The main objective, of course, is the guests' condition," says the president of Dehoga Rhineland-Palatinate, Gereon Haumann. He's talking about hiking groups and stag parties who, despite "having good vibes," tend to arrive "quite tipsy." While most folks behave, grouchy tendencies should be avoided. Communication with others is essential in such spaces, as advised by Habekost with a smile, referring to the famous German phrase: "Come on, let's sit here!"
Patience and Consideration: The Secret Ingredients
Hahn suggests being patient, considering the longer distances service staff cover in the outdoor area. Meanwhile, unexpected noises from children or smoky neighbors can spoil your drinks - but it's all about everyone's comfort. "The permission for smoking applies outdoors where it’s not explicitly forbidden," explains Haumann. "Consideration for others is valuable for your own enjoyment."
Sun Glare and Wallets:
Comedian Habekost advises bringing your sunglasses to avoid the German cliché of squinting in the sun! Also, beware of unfamiliar bartenders when ordering drinks like Aperol Spritz. "Be wise who's mixing that pitcher!"
- Terms and Conditions (Biergarten Style)
- A deposit may be required for glasses and mugs, so be prepared to return them for your refund.
- Beer coasters may reserve tables or indicate occupied seats. Respect these markers.
- Finally, sip your beer, not guzzle it.
Enjoy the sunshine, the laughter, and the food — just remember your manners and respect German customs. After all, beer gardens are a testament to camaraderie!
