Fire engine designed for children sparks interest in volunteering - Guide for Encouraging Children to Lend a Helping Hand
In Upper Franconia, Germany, children as young as six are being introduced to the world of firefighting through lovingly crafted miniature fire trucks known as children's fire brigade cars. These miniature vehicles, built and equipped by local fire departments with support from sponsors and companies, offer a playful and engaging way for children to learn about fire protection and the fire brigade.
The event held at the Waischenfeld fire station showcased 14 children's fire brigade cars from various German regions. The Waischenfeld children's fire brigade car, considered "priceless" by Daniel Brand, the organizer of the meeting and leader of the Waischenfeld children's fire brigade, was among them. The children operating the cars can feel like real firefighters due to the detailed equipment of the miniature fire brigade cars, which include flashing lights and sirens, although no real emergencies were present during the event.
This approach to fire brigade activities is designed to bridge the gap with other leisure activities and attract children before they would typically be eligible for formal volunteer work at age twelve. By making the experience enjoyable and accessible at an early age, the children's fire brigades are addressing the challenge that voluntary fire services face in attracting and retaining young members amid competing activities.
The success of this initiative is evident in the substantial growth of children involved in these groups in Bavaria. From about 2,800 in 2015, the number has grown to over 30,500 by the end of 2024, organized in more than 1,600 groups. This growth demonstrates the effectiveness of integrating playful, hands-on fire brigade activities in encouraging volunteerism and maintaining the future of the firefighting voluntary service.
Florian Wiedemann, district administrator of Bayreuth, emphasized the importance of inspiring children for the fire service. The children's fire brigade in Goldkronach, another district of Bayreuth, is also attracting parents to join the volunteer fire service.
While the children's fire brigade offers a primary focus on firefighting, other leisure activities are offered alongside to ensure a well-rounded experience for the children. The aim of these events is to inspire children for the topic of fire brigade, as most fire departments are voluntary and rely on volunteers. By fostering enthusiasm for the cause at an early age, the children's fire brigades are helping to secure the future of the voluntary fire service in Germany.
