'Green Label' initiative aimed at elevating Vietnam's global eco-friendly tourism standing
Vietnam's Tourism Association Pushes for Global Recognition of VITA Green Certification
The Viẹt Nam International Travel Mart (VITM) in Ha Noi, themed "Viẹt Nam Tourism - Green Transition for Sustainable Development," marked a significant milestone in the awareness and action towards a comprehensive green tourism ecosystem. This event underscores Vietnam's commitment to green tourism, supporting its national green growth strategy and its COP26 pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA) is working diligently to make the VITA Green criteria an internationally recognized sustainable tourism standard. To achieve this, VITA is aligning the certification with global sustainability standards, reducing plastic waste, and promoting eco-conscious tourism practices.
Other efforts include introducing a bilingual logo and slogan to enhance recognition and accessibility in the international market, building a network of model businesses and destinations that exemplify green tourism practices, launching training programs for tourism operators, entering international cooperation agreements, and actively participating in global tourism fairs, forums, and events.
VITA is also positioning the VITA Green label as both a certification and a “green passport” that symbolizes Vietnamese tourism’s commitment to sustainability while preserving a strong Vietnamese cultural identity. The aim is to encourage rapid adoption by tourism businesses, with a target to certify 100 members by the end of 2025.
Phùng Quang Tháng, Chairman of the green tourism sub-association, expressed hope that VITA Green would become an internationally recognized sustainable tourism certification. Thắng proposed that international cooperation would allow certified businesses to join the global green tourism supply chain.
VITA Chairman Vu The Binh stated that green tourism is a global trend. He emphasized that the rapid adoption of green standards for VITA Green could enhance Vietnam's tourism value by offering internationally recognized products and services.
The target is to reach at least 100 certified members by the end of 2025. Each locality should select one or two model green destinations to spearhead nationwide adoption of the "VITA Green Destination" model. Thắng suggested integrating VITA Green into the national sustainable tourism programme and featuring its logo in promotional campaigns.
Certified operators under VITA Green could gain both domestic and international recognition, strengthening Vietnam's position on the global sustainability tourism map. Many countries have made green tourism the foundation of sustainable growth over the past decade. Viẹt Nam has pursued this orientation since 2019, turning it into a nationwide movement.
Currently, there are 30 members certified in a green tourism sub-association under VITA. Bình emphasized that the rapid adoption of green standards for VITA Green could enhance Vietnam's tourism value by offering internationally recognized products and services. Green tourism not only protects the environment and ecosystems but also attracts high-spending, quality visitors, boosting industry revenues.
In August 2022, VITA held a seminar in Ha Noi to discuss elevating the VITA Green into an internationally recognized brand. The event was a testament to VITA's commitment to making Vietnam a leading player in the global green tourism industry.
