Dormagen-Hackenbroich: The Debate Over Graffiti Art and Vandalism
A local initiative, Graffiti Action Dormagen (GAD), is challenging the narrative of graffiti as vandalism in several barren city areas, including the gymnasium of the Grundschule Burg in Hackenbroich. Last week, nine graffiti artists collaborated to create a vibrant "Space Jam" inspired mural, backed by the Bürgerstiftung Dormagen and the Eigenbetrieb of the city of Dormagen.
Christoph Schade, project leader of GAD, spoke about the importance of enhancing public spaces through art, stating, "This project at Grundschule Burg in Hackenbroich has sustainably improved the gymnasium's surroundings." He also expressed his gratitude to all the supporters of GAD.
While some may view graffiti as willful destruction or defacement, GAD's approach is designed to protect the decorated buildings from further damage or disfigurement. With a set of guidelines emphasizing personal expression over political, sexual, or religious content, GAD's work provides a recognized outlet for local artistic talent.
Last year, GAD successfully completed four large-scale facade designs and four workshop offers in Dormagen, involving various local institutions such as Currenta, SVGD, and Vivawest Dormagen. In addition to youth cultural education, the voluntary initiative has now opened its doors to adults—expanding beyond the traditional scope of artistic expression among children and young people.
Although graffiti can often be divisive, depending on its context—whether it has the consent of property owners or local authorities and its intended purpose—it can also contribute to a lively and colorful urban experience. As society’s views on graffiti evolve, it's essential to highlight initiatives like GAD that foster a strong and positive connection between art and the community.

The graffiti mural created by GAD in Hackenbroich's school gymnasium underscores their mission to enrich public spaces, infusing a vibrant "Space Jam" aesthetic into the home-and-garden surroundings of Dormagen. As GAD broadens its scope to include adult participants, it not only fosters a dynamic lifestyle but also promotes the protection and expansion of home-and-garden areas through art.
