Germany Urges Gardeners to Create Wildlife Havens with Native Plants
Gardeners in Germany are urged to create havens for local wildlife by following new guidelines from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and a coalition of nature conservation groups. The recommendations, published in 2021, encourage gardeners to promote biodiversity and protect native flora and fauna by embracing wilderness areas and native plants.
The BfN, alongside over 20 nature conservation organisations, advises gardeners to provide a variety of habitats, including long grass, shrubs, trees, and water features, to attract diverse wildlife. It also recommends avoiding pesticides and herbicides to safeguard pollinators and other local wildlife.
To create a wildlife-friendly garden, choose native plants tailored to the local climate and soil. These plants provide food and shelter for local species, supporting a diverse range of wildlife. Native plants also require less maintenance and are more resistant to pests and diseases than non-native species. However, gardeners should be mindful of invasive plants and animals that can disrupt food chains, spread diseases, and reduce biodiversity.
By following these guidelines, gardeners can play a significant role in preserving the natural balance of the environment. Embracing native plants and creating diverse habitats not only benefits local wildlife but also contributes to the preservation of Germany's rich biodiversity.
