Foretelling of The Eternal Witch (Part 4)
In the tranquil coastal town of Brean Down, near the mouth of the River Axe, Tanya King, the protagonist of the novel "Marandina: Prophesy of the Immortal Witch," begins her day. Tanya, a single mother to Danielle, lives in a static caravan on the beach, a part of her divorce settlement.
As the sun rises, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, Tanya can be found meditating, feeling the chill from dew seeping through her baggy tracksuit bottoms. This morning routine is a recent addition to Tanya's life, a result of insomnia and the stress of her workplace, a problem her friend and work colleague, Collette, suggested addressing through yoga.
Meanwhile, Danielle, still asleep, misses the serene sunrise. Tanya, preparing coffee and reading Stephen King's Cujo, cannot help but worry about her daughter. A few weeks ago, Danielle had a recurring nightmare, one that left her waking up breathing rapidly and with tangled bedclothes. In the dream, she found herself lost in a forest of black and white terrain, pursued by unseen forces.
Tanya's concern deepens as she observes Danielle's lack of interest in the sunshine outside, instead absorbed in the small screen of her mobile phone, scrolling through TikTok. Tanya, ever the protective mother, wants to understand the cause of Danielle's nightmares and find a way to stop them.
As the day progresses, Tanya plans a beach stroll, hoping to lift the mood and create a memorable moment for Danielle. However, the peace is momentarily disrupted by the shrill calls of seagulls, their graceful flight juxtaposing the harshness of their cries. Tanya finds nature's force to be primeval and magical, something to be embraced.
In the distance, a man walks his golden retriever on the beach, while egrets and cormorants are observed in the Channel, with egrets seeking fish and cormorants traversing waterways. Tanya, despite her worries, manages to find beauty in the simple moments, a testament to her resilience and the strength that comes from being the Immortal Witch.
Glenn, Tanya's former husband, lives in a rented flat in Bristol. Despite their separation, they maintain contact for the sake of Danielle. Tanya's life, while filled with the mystical lore and conflicts of Marandina, also includes the mundane realities of single parenthood and the challenges that come with it.
As Tanya and Danielle walk along the beach, the sunshine casting long shadows on the sand, Tanya cannot help but wonder what the future holds for them both. But for now, they focus on the present, enjoying the simple pleasure of an ice-cream on the beach, a small moment of happiness in a world filled with magic and mystery.
In order to maintain Danielle's health and well-being, Tanya decides to incorporate lifestyle changes, such as yoga, into her daily routine. The tranquil beach setting, with its home-and-garden like surroundings, serves as the perfect backdrop for Tanya's efforts to create a balanced lifestyle for her and her daughter.
