Finnish heritage brand Kalevala derives inspiration for its jewellery from the wonders of nature.
Martin Bergström, a Swedish designer, has unveiled a new collection for the renowned Finnish jewellery brand, Kalevala. The "Itu" collection, inspired by the theme of sprouting and new life, symbolizes growth, transformation, and hope through the use of the seed as a central motif.
The collection draws inspiration from the raw, untamed power of Finnish nature, incorporating elements like roots, decay, botanical forms, and the rhythms of life reflected by pearls symbolizing moonlight. Bergström's artistic process involved hand-drawn sketches translating organic shapes into sculptural, dynamic forms with tactile surfaces that play with matte and gleaming textures.
Material-wise, the Itu collection is crafted in Kalevala's Helsinki factory using recycled premium-quality silver and gold, reflecting a commitment to sustainability and responsible material sourcing. The collection comprises necklaces, earrings, and varied pieces showcasing Bergström’s distinctive organic visual language, realized by skilled Finnish goldsmiths who transform natural themes into wearable art.
The "Itu" collection also embodies environmental consciousness through the use of recycled metals and symbolizes the resilience and renewal inherent in nature, resonating with themes of growth, hope, and transformation. This aligns with Kalevala's longstanding cultural mission to honour Finnish heritage, myth, and the power of women while positioning the brand at the forefront of modern, ethical design practices.
Aino Ahlnäs, the current creative director of Kalevala, has welcomed Bergström's collaboration, marking a new chapter for the brand. The Itu collection is intended to be worn, cherished, and potentially passed on, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary ecological and artistic sensibilities.
Kalevala, founded in the 1930s, was initially created with the purpose of funding a statue to honour a Finnish woman. During the Winter War (1939-40) with the Soviet Union, the jewellery made by Kalevala was sold to support women and children. Almost a century later, a third of all profits from Kalevala still support disadvantaged women in various initiatives.
Björn Wecström is another designer who has previously worked with Kalevala, furthering the brand's rich history in the jewellery industry, which spans over 88 years. The Finnish jewellery brand has a significant role in Nordic culture and continues to be a pioneer in the industry, embracing innovation while preserving tradition.
