Festival organizes $75K fundraising event following city's proposal to decrease financial support for arts and jazz event.
In the vibrant city of Denton, Texas, the much-loved Denton Arts & Jazz Festival is facing a challenge this year due to proposed budget cuts. The festival, known for its lively atmosphere and diverse offerings, has traditionally received in-kind funding from the city to cover services like police, EMS, and fire personnel. However, the city's proposed budget cuts aim to reduce in-kind spending for special events from $400,000 to $200,000[1].
To bridge this gap, the festival has launched a fundraiser with a goal of $75,000. The campaign is being conducted directly on the festival's website, where supporters can donate. In a remarkable show of community spirit, the fundraiser managed to raise $2,011 in under 24 hours[2].
Mayor Gerard Hudspeth has also encouraged people to support the festival, expressing his sentiments in a Facebook post[2]. The Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) has shown interest in participating in the sponsorship program, which could provide additional support[2].
As of now, the exact progress towards the $75,000 goal remains undisclosed. However, the initial enthusiasm and support from the community are promising signs. Last year, the festival received approximately $200,000 of the in-kind funding[1].
In response to the budget cuts, the Denton Police Department is considering the use of private security firms as an alternative to police resources for the festival[1]. City staff will continue to work with DCTA and provide updates on this matter in the future.
