Lock, Stock, and Barrel: Exploring the Legacy of Johanna Sebus

Delve into the heart-wrenching tale of Johanna Sebus, a heroine whose valiance continues to resonate over two centuries later. This young girl bravely saved her mother during the catastrophic flood disaster of 1809, only to meet her end while attempting to rescue others.

On June 14th, experience a unique tour hosted by Wirtschaft, Tourismus & Marketing Stadt Kleve GmbH (WTM) led by certified guide Hildegard Liebeton. She steps into the shoes of Christiane von Vernejoul, a chum of Goethe, who urges the famed poet to eternalize Johanna's story in a ballad.

Hildegard shares, "Though Johanna Sebus' tragedy echoes from the annals of time, her heroic deed remains pertinent. It embodies selfless love for one's neighbor, a sentiment that seems to be dwindling in our world."

This 90-minute stroll takes you through Brienen and Wardhausen, offering insights into the surge of the Rhine and the disastrous breaches it caused. The tour culminates at the Brienen wayside cross, erected to commemorate the church of Mary, consumed by the breach, and uncovers intriguing stories about the lock in Brienen.

The journey commences at 11 am at the Johanna Sebus monument in Wardhausen (Johanna-Sebus-Straße), with an entry fee of 9 €. Pre-registration is a must via www.kleve-tourismus.de or WTM Stadt Kleve (Tel.: 02821 84806).
