European Union encouraged to embrace biotechnology through Commission-led initiative
In the heart of Gröpelingen district, an exciting transformation is underway. Funded by the EU project "Biodiverse Cities", the Mayor-Ehlers-Platz is set for a metamorphosis into an attractive living space by summer.
The transformation will kick off on May 22, the Day of Biodiversity, starting at 2 pm. Everyone is invited to join the festivities and plant the beds together. The day will be musically accompanied by local artists, and catering will be provided by Klimaagentur energiekonsens, AWO, Ice Molin, Sheddy's Afro food truck, and a snack bar.
The heart of the transformation lies in the installation of 16 large raised beds, to be planted with trees, shrubs, and perennials. This initiative is part of a broader plan to create high-quality green spaces with diverse native flora, promoting biodiversity and providing habitats for insects, birds, and other animals. The focus is on "nature-based solutions" to enhance urban biodiversity and climate resilience.
Wildflower meadows, permeable areas around trees for rain, and redesigning residential streets with new street trees and permeable paving are examples of the measures planned. By winter 2026, additional measures focusing on biodiversity and climate resilience will be implemented in the district of Gröpelingen.
The Gröpelingen district was identified in a study as requiring climate adaptation measures. This project is a prelude to a series of activities planned by the Environment and Climate Senator and Bremen Environmental Consultation within the EU project "Biodiverse Cities".
The festival will offer diverse activities for children and adults, including a photo contest, free energy advice, and a bike check. Moreover, the specialist department "Adaptation to Climate Change" of the Senator for Environment, Climate, and Science will offer a public workshop on development potentials of green spaces in Lindenhof during the festival.
The Precious Plastic Bremen initiative will also have an action on plastic during the festival, asking guests to bring clean, old plastic.
The redesign of Mayor-Ehlers-Platz is just the beginning of a larger journey towards a more biodiverse and climate-resilient Gröpelingen. Join us in celebrating the Day of Biodiversity and be a part of this transformative journey.
